To this, buick's designers and product planners seem to be suggesting that a blend of basic virtues wrapped in tasteful trimmings, coupled with sensible pricing, will attract customers. the buick century was totally redesigned two years ago. The century is not startling from any angle, but it looks well-balanced and clean, free of the kinds of dramatic tweaks that can make a new design look old in short order. its overall form follows current gm design philosophy, being made up of long, unbroken surfaces, soft corners and a subtle wedge form rising from nose to tail. The nose carries a plated buick grille -- minus the former stand-up hood ornament -- that looks right at home between two flattened-oval headlamps. Roof pillars are thin, giving driver and passengers plenty of visibility. In short, the century is attractive, but doesn't draw too much attention to itself. to some, the century's appearance may be a little too quiet, and it may carry too many hints of other gm products. For a modest base price, the custom comes with power windows, mirrors, door locks, and front seat adjustments, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, antilock brakes (abs), a tilt-steering column and tinted glass. for not much more money, the $20,707 limited is available., which adds magnetic variable-assist power steering, pinstripes, dual-zone air conditioning and fancier wheel covers. It takes more than a casual once-over to tell the two models apart. added to the standard equipment package supplied with both century models this year is a traction-control system. The system reduces engine power when wheelspin is detected and is a welcome addition; more sophisticated systems apply braking force to individual spinning wheel. Also standard for '99 is a tire-inflation monitor that lets the driver know a tire is low via a warning light in the instrument cluster; the system does not identify which tire is low, however. the options list is short. Among the amenities are a couple of modestly priced model-specific upgrade packages, a better audio system with cd player, a power glass sunroof, and alloy wheels. Also available is gm's onstar system: using a cellular telephone and onboard global positioning system sensors, onstar allows the driver to communicate with a dedicated center that can offer roadside assistance, route advice, stolen vehicle tracking and other information. interioranyone who has ever spent time in a buick or any other six-passenger gm sedan will feel right at home in the century. Full-width seats front and rear hold six full-size adults on soft cushions covered in smooth, attractive cloth. But that's up to individual taste. All control buttons and switches are large, well-marked and properly located for easy use. Instruments are clear, too, though there are only three. Warning lights and chimes will alert them to any problems. driving impressionthough a midsize sedan when judged by pricing and dimensions, the century feels more like a large luxury car from behind the wheel. Buick knows its customers aren't looking for the firmness of a german autobahn-burner. And that's what they get. ride quality is the century's outstanding feature. It is soft and compliant over any road surface. Bumps, dips or ridges on the pavement are seldom heard or felt. Instead, there are smooth up-and-down movements that indicate, in a muted way, that the century has been driven over something, with little indication as to the nature or size of the obstruction. Road and suspension noise are absent. buick has abandoned its mushy dyna-ride shock absorber calibrations this year, opting instead for a slightly firmer ride. This in no way detracts from ride quality, but does reduce some of the body roll and rocking-horse motions common to previous versions. we'd like to see the magnasteer electronic power steering tuned slightly different, however. The low steering effort is nice in tight parking quarters, but there's not enough steering feel at low speeds. Then again, we may not represent what a century driver wants. Few, if any, owners will ever drive a century down a canyon road at anything above a modest speed, and fewer still would want the car's steering to have sports car precision. the bottom line is that the century is quite pleasant to drive when used as its designers intended. There's a good reason: there is little, if anything, about the entry-level buick calculated to generate excitement. but if the century does not thrill, it does satisfy. The only real surprise is the price. It's easy to climb in and out and the interior is attractive and user friendly. It's a perfect example of the new category of crossover vehicles, a category that defies categorization. Rendezvous combines aspects of suvs, minivans, and wagons. for starters, it's versatile, seating five to seven passengers. The styling is nice. It has fine manners on the highway, a benefit of unibody construction normally associated with sedans. There is much to like here in terms of engineering, flexibility, and appearance. The three-row interior compares favorably with the passenger capacity of costlier vehicles. Satellite radio and a rear-seat dvd system are now available as options. . lineupbuick rendezvous comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Cx awd 28,545) adds the all-wheel-drive system plus anti-lock brakes (abs) and side-impact airbags. the cx plus package 1925) adds onstar, a driver-information center, overhead console, ultrasonic rear parking assist, a tire-inflation monitor, aluminum wheels and other features, but not abs and side airbags. the awd cxl package 3530) and fwd cxl package 4655) include all that plus dual-zone air conditioning, leather upholstery, six-way power seats, premium stereo with cassette and cd capability, rear-seat audio controls and headphone jacks, and unique exterior trim. Xm satellite radio features 100 coast-to-coast digital channels, including 71 music channels (more than 30 of them commercial-free) and 29 channels of sports, talk, children's and entertainment programming. That's usually a sign that the design team (headed, by the way, by a woman, liz wetzel) got the scale right. But with nearly 64 inches between the left and right tires, buick claims that the rendezvous has a wider track than an suv. Rendezvous' strong horizontal design visually suggests stability as well. the rendezvous' traditional buick grille emphasizes a familial resemblance to the park avenue, but it somehow looks less formal and more cheery. In short, we like its looks. . interiorbuick rendezvous can seat up to seven passengers or two people with scads of stuff. Captain's chairs (an elegant choice for just $350) can be ordered instead of the 50-50 split bench seat in the second row. The optional third row seat 465) folds flat into the floor. the flexibility of the seating configurations is an exercise in automotive origami. The seats fold and tuck and fit into an amazing number of arrangements. For maximum capacity, however, the center row can be removed. (the third-row seat tucks flat into the floor, so it doesn't have to come out.) hiding places and lockable bins are strategically placed here and there. even with seven inches of ground clearance and all-wheel drive, getting in and out of the rendezvous is more like getting in and out of a sedan than an suv; small children, arthritic knees and tight-skirts can be grateful for that. All seats are easy to access and quite comfortable. access to the third row is far simpler than in most vehicles with three rows of seats. Once back there, the third row is pleasantly suitable for two full-size adults. Well, the rendezvous' rear opening is wide enough to take the proverbial building material lying flat. Well, the buick engineers found a way to do it. Too bad being unobtrusive is a mark of success because this accomplishment needs to stand up and take applause. It's best appreciated when driving with a full load of people and their stuff on a nasty, sleety, darkening afternoon with a slippery glaze on the street. but all is not sheer delight inside the rendezvous. The plastic used for the instrument panel looks dowdy compared with the rest of the interior. . driving impressionbuick rendezvous has reassuring road manners. Its long wheel base (six inches longer than that of the grand cherokee) smoothes surface irregularities like a sedan or a minivan. in handling the more sinuous highways, again it favors the minivan/sedan end of the scale. Driven in the truly twisty bits the rendezvous comported itself surprisingly well. Gm's all-wheel-drive system, called versatrak, requires no input from the driver. Versatrak drives just the front wheels until sensors agree that some traction assistance from the rear is advisable. Now this is where the versatrak is really clever: power is meted out separately and individually to each rear wheel, not just to the rear axle. The result is better traction and increased stability, making the rendezvous more capable in the snow and easier to drive in the slush. overall, the road demeanor of the rendezvous is pleasing. It stopped well, accelerated with reasonable aplomb (can't everything use more power?) and was quiet for an suv, though a little road-noisy by luxury sedan standards. buick rendezvous deserves a look on the basis of economy alone. In the first place it uses regular unleaded gas, not premium. The buick folks have taken dozens of time-consuming and expensive steps to quiet down the engine, transmission, all-wheel-drive system, and tires, isolate the front and rear suspension and steering from the cabin, and wrap the entire package in sound-deadening materials in the floor, pillars and doors, all under the rubric of quiet ride. Conversations between first-row and third-row occupants at 70-plus mph were heard and understood in normal speaking voices, and the xm satellite music played through loud and clear at reasonable volumes. the suspension underneath the lambda platform, at least on the buick version, is far more sophisticated, far sharper in handling and far more compliant and comfortable than what we've come to expect from this class of vehicles. The rear suspension is especially complex and expensive, designed to work well with or without the rear-drive portion of the all-wheel-drive system, and using elaborate aluminum h-arms to put the wheels out as far as possible to the corners and allow for a wide, flat load floor up above. flying around on ozark mountain two-lane roads or humming down the interstate 44 and 64 network in and around st. Buick says it has the competition, specifically the ford five hundred, dodge intrepid, honda accord, and toyota camry, beat on a number of fronts, including quietness and overall refinement. This is a car that was well on its way to completion when gm vice-chairman and product guru bob lutz joined the company, and charged the buick team to delay the program one year, get the car right, and then introduce it. It's pretty clear that the wait, and the extra effort and money invested into the program, were worth it. lacrosse is not an all-new car by any means. It's built in canada on gm's w-car intermediate platform, one of the oldest in the gm chassis inventory. But about 80 percent of the parts and systems underneath are new, along with new interior and exterior designs. the lacrosse has a rich, high-quality looking interior with attractive woodgrain trim, nicely presented instruments and controls and available leather seats with nice-looking gathered stitching. Buick's quiet tuning has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in among the entire class. the lacrosse rides smoothly and quietly, but its steering is much more precise than previous models and it turns into corners crisply with little body lean. About the only new design theme is at the rear, where there is a discernible dent in the decklid that ties the taillamps together. There is a single, slender chrome side spear on the doors and body in lieu of anything sportier. the base lacrosse cx comes with 16-inch wheels and bolt-on faux alloy wheel-covers and has almost no decoration at all. Body, door, and fender gaps are noticeably smaller than on the regal and century, and the new aero headlamps are said to be 35-percent brighter. Cx models can be identified by a grained graphite-color finish on the rocker panels underneath the doors, while other models have these panels in body color. gm's aging w-car architecture has been torn apart and put back together to improve the lacrosse's ride and handling by several orders of magnitude. Altogether, buick says, about 40 additional pounds of sound deadeners have been added to the car, including structural foam in the front fenders. interiorthe buick designers were given a much longer wheelbase, two inches longer than the old century and regal. And all of it was dedicated to back seat legroom. My 6-foot, 4-inch frame can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room to spare now. the lacrosse interior is altogether new and different from the cheapie regal and century rent-a-car interiors. There are fewer but larger individual pieces, built to closer tolerances, for a richer, higher quality look inside. The instruments and controls are presented in white on black, and each of the three round dials in the deeply tunneled instrument panel has a chrome ring around it. Very nicely presented, sportier-looking than previous instruments, with small-diameter chrome-ringed knobs arrayed around the dashboard. the center stack is done in a mica-flecked flat black, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy to put through its menu, though the information panel is so glossy that it's hard to read in the morning or afternoon light. The entire dashboard is decorated with a very good imitation woodgrain material. Taken together, the system has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in in the entire class. new optional features available on the lacrosse that were never available on the century or regal include a remote starting system that will work from up to 500 feet away, onstar, xm satellite radio, and stabilitrak, and if we were ordering a lacrosse, we would add all of these excellent systems to make a truly complete, safe and all-weather family car. driving impressionwe drove all of the lacrosse models at the car's introduction in northern michigan. Both of the available v6 engines have been tuned to give a nice, healthy growl on full throttle, but disappear into the background in high-gear cruising. the standard 3. 8-liter engine is rated at 200 horsepower and 225 foot-pounds of torque, a cast-iron v6 that's been fitted with electronic throttle control (etc), a stiffer crankshaft, an underhood silencer, new pulleys, new power steering, and a structural oil pan all in the name of less mechanical noise. With all of its new parts, the 3. 8 is the same gutsy v-6 it's always been, with good torque on demand, smooth, quiet operation, and 29 miles per gallon on the highway in the new car. the new 3. 6-liter, the so-called high-feature v6, with double overhead cams and electronic throttle control has quite a bit more horsepower and torque, revs more freely, but comes only in the cxs (at a $3,000 price penalty). The final numbers are expected to be 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 230 foot-pounds of torque at 3200 rpm, and 28 mpg. the transmissions in all three versions worked flawlessly. The optional stabilitrak suspension package comes with magnasteer ii power steering. we found the csx more sporty to drive through the trees on an autumn day in northern michigan. Underway, it's smooth and quiet, with precise steering and a chassis that handles winding roads with grace and security. Inside, it's elegant, comfortable and easy to operate. It's a very luxurious car, and at a price that represents a commendable value. the buick lucerne is a full-size, premium sedan with front-wheel drive and a standard v6 engine. The lucerne cx is a traditional buick, with the premium ride suspension maximized for cushioned comfort. The lucerne cxl comes with a firmer (but certainly not at all harsh) ride and handling suspension, and is positioned to compete with the toyota avalon and lexus es 350. We found it a very enjoyable car to drive, with agile handling and plenty of performance. The cxl special edition adds numerous trim and convenience features. The super is the top of the lucerne line and includes a v8 engine and magnetic ride control, a sophisticated adaptive suspension with responsive handling. advanced safety systems are available on all models. Lane departure warning uses a camera to warn drivers of inadvertent lane changes. Stabilitrak, which includes the function of traction control, and brake assist are offered as well. for 2010, the changes are relatively minor.
