Tops in safety, low in price. introductionthe kia sedona has just about everything the honda odyssey has, except the reputation, for a lot less money. Inside, there's seven-passenger seating with seats that easily collapse to create a vast cargo space. Every cabin convenience known to man is either standard or available. The sedona engine, for example, is a modern v6 tuned to 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. That's more than a match for the honda odyssey's 244 hp and 240 pound-feet. And, just like the odyssey, the sedona backs up that power with a responsive five-speed automatic transmission and a sophisticated suspension. the sedona was all-new for 2006. For 2009, sirius satellite radio capability, with auxiliary, mp3 and usb connectivity, is standard on all three trim levels, with three months of complimentary service. There is also an optional navigation system, available on the ex trim level. lineupthe 2009 kia sedona is offered in two wheelbase lengths. Both seat seven, with the shorter, swb version giving up mostly luggage space, and a little passenger space in both the second and third rows. The short version comes in a single trim level. The long-wheelbase (lwb) version comes in two trim levels. the sedona swb 21,245) comes with cloth upholstery, two rows of two captain's chairs, and a removable 50/50-split bench in back. The first two rows get power windows; third-row windows tilt out manually. Three-zone climate control also comes standard, along with power locks with remote keyless entry, two 12-volt power outlets, intermittent wipers front and rear, privacy glass, eight-speaker cd sound system with auxiliary input jack, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, overhead console, and 16-inch tires on steel wheels. Options include a convenience package 300) consisting of roof rails and carpeted floor mats; roof-rail cross bars 200); and just the floor mats 150). the sedona lwb lx 24,245) gets upgraded cloth upholstery and a full heated front windshield, along with additional space in both the second and third rows. The 60/40-split third row folds flat into the floor, instead of being removable. Optional are a trailer hitch 375), and a dvd entertainment system 1,200) with two wireless headsets and remote. Navigation is available 1,600), but navigation and the premium entertainment package cannot be ordered together. Safety features include frontal airbags (the front passenger airbag turns itself off if a child is in the seat), side-impact airbags (for torso protection) for front-seat passengers, side-curtain airbags (for head protection) for the outboard passengers in all three rows of seats, and anti-whiplash active headrests in front. Also standard are electronic stability control with traction control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (abs with ebd) and brake assist, and a tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundit's not easy for any minivan to be distinctive, and if the sedona's styling isn't unique, it is clean and crisp, and classy. Its heart is european, and that influence spreads to its handsome styling. the sheet metal has been carefully sculpted. A crease tapers down from the steeply sloping windshield to the grille, falling between the big wedge-shaped headlights and the small sharp corners of two horizontal grille openings, long black slots with a single chrome strip in each, and kia badge in center. The fascia/bumper under the grille is thick, with an air intake having cage-like slats to keep out stones. Tidy fog lamps on the ex surround the intake, inside cavities that sweep up at the corners to match the lines of the headlamps. the wheelwell flares are nicely done. They don't go out of their way to be noticed, by being bigger than they need to be; they carry just the right squared-off but smooth edges. They're sculpted by the same knife that carved the beltline running from the headlamps to taillights. The trailing edge of that third window matches the modest slope of the roofline. the rear view is functional, with a big rear window and taillights whose shape matches the lines of the rest of the vehicle. From the rear, the sedona lacks style; it could be any minivan. the shorter, swb version rides a wheelbase of only 113. 8 inches, which is 5. 1 inches shorter than the more popular lwb models. At 189. 4 inches overall, the swb is 12. 6 inches shorter, bumper-to-bumper, than the lwb versions. All of this length seems to have come out of the sedona's hindquarters, which are noticeably stubbier in the shortie version. There's far less wraparound to the rear bumper; the slot for the sliding rear door almost reaches the tail light, and the rear wheel tucks up tighter against the rear edge of the sliding side door. Overall, the chop job has been very well handled, with little compromise in sedona's appearance. interiorkia's approach to designing the sedona, copying and bettering the competition, is reflected in the interior. It's a cohesive improvement of all that's out there. the kia sedona driver feels like the master of her or his domain, looking down on the vast and functional center stack with all its controls, including a big leather-wrapped shift knob. This is a much better location for the shifter than between the seats. All the main controls are there, and are mostly easy-to-operate square black buttons with easily-read white lettering. Air vents are black and business-like. The optional power sliding doors and liftgate, triggered on the instrument panel or remote key fob, are a wonderful convenience. the sedona comes with captain's chairs in the second row. Second-row legroom in the long-wheelbase models is a generous 40. 9 inches. The swb model maintains the same second-row head and hip room, but legroom shrinks to 37. 0 inches. third-row bench seating is standard on all models. This area is recessed like the trunk of a car, so grocery bags won't slide around as much. the second-row seats fold, but not flat. Press a button and each seatback folds down and then the seat flips up so it squeezes against the front seatbac.

The deck is distinctively short, yet trunk space remains a useful 15. 3 cubic feet. The fender flares are edgy and pronounced, allowing the rest of the body to be narrower and slip through the wind with less frontal area. The gap between the tires and flares was tightened. Altima presents a slippery 0. 31 drag coefficient, thanks to many things, including the steeply sloped windshield. the headlamps and taillamps are elaborate and appear almost exotic. Nissan calls the headlamp arrangement a multi-parabola, which means its coverage is all over the place. As for the taillamps, nissan says they cost nearly as much as the headlamps, so don't back into anything, and they definitely do look expensive. They're covered with clear plastic like the headlamps, and contain a silver ray-gun looking cylinder with the red lamp, plus a round white beam for the backup light, and a big orange piece for the parking lamp and turn signal. interiorthe nissan altima features a roomy, comfortable cabin. We've been in many luxury cars that didn't feel this classy inside. The available leather feels rich. Soft materials are used for touches like padded armrests, and the overall level of refinement is higher than in pre-2007 models. They feel firm and longer and higher than in the previous models. They also have optional power lumbar support and elevate higher, something that most cars do nowadays, as people need a better view of the road, with all the suvs out there blocking visibility. The gauges are arranged in the practical tripod design, with speedometer in center, tachometer on left, and fuel gauge and water temperature on right. The lettering is sharp, white on black, with red needles. the center stack is neatly designed, with three hvac (heating-air conditioning) vents at the top, audio controls in the center. Below, big, handy knobs handle hvac functions. Usable storage slots are interspersed. That leaves the system in the accessories mode, and drains the juice. Without the owner's manual we would not have been able to begin to figure out how to make it work. Not even with a passenger totally devoted to the challenge while we were stuck in traffic.

There's respectable power from the standard v6, and more than enough with the optional v8. mountaineer shares its structure and most major components with the ford explorer. It's the mountaineer's adventurous, architectural look that sets it apart. While the explorer almost seems designed to blend into the suburban wallpaper, the mountaineer demands more attention. It points the way to mercury's future with its waterfall grille, while paying homage to mercury's heritage of styling innovation. mountaineer was completely re-engineered for 2002, with a new frame, a new independent rear suspension, a new front suspension, new steering, new seating formats, and a raft of new standard and optional features. For 2004, mountaineer adds even more choices, including second-row bucket seats and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Power adjustable pedals and an in-dash six-disc cd changer are available at all trim levels. Electronic stability control, which ford calls advancetrac, is now offered on two-wheel-drive models and we recommend this feature. lineupmercury mountaineer comes in two models: two-wheel drive 29,350) and all-wheel drive 31,530). Each is available with a 4. 0-liter v6 or a 4. 6-liter v8. All mountaineers come with a five-speed automatic transmission. The system comes with two wireless headphones, remote control and a universal jack. walkaroundmercury mountaineer's expressive design is refreshing in a sea of comparatively faceless suvs. The exterior graphics are straightforward, businesslike block letters. Optional running boards are convenient for passengers of small stature trying to enter and exit gracefully. interiormountaineer uses trendy matte-aluminum trim on the door panels, steering wheel, instrument panel and dashboard, and it looks terrific. The aluminum trim extends to the main gauges, the tachometer and speedometer, which are done in black-on-white graphics that turn orange-on-white when the lights are on. It takes only a couple of rides to find all the controls quickly and easily. Switches, buttons and levers are large, well marked and easy to use. The seat heaters that come on luxury and premier models warm the seats quickly, but the buttons are mounted on the side of the seat and can be difficult to find and then distinguish from the seat adjustment switches; fortunately, an indicator on the dash shows when the seat heaters are on. Those adjustments include the seatback recliner handle, the power seat switch for fore/aft, and the lumbar pump switch. third-row seats are a bit cramped for 6-foot, 4-inch testers, but the second row is accommodating. Second-row bucket seats 490) are available on luxury and premier. the second- and third-row seats are easy to fold away, which reveals a huge 82 cubic-foot cargo bay. The seats are easy to restore to their upright and locked positions. driving impressionthe 2004 mercury mountaineer hovers near the top of the class of mid-size suvs. The standard v6 delivers respectable performance. It isn't as smooth as toyota's v6, but it is entirely within acceptable bounds. The 4. 0-liter v6 with overhead cams and aluminum heads is rated at 210 horsepower at 5100 rpm, and 254 pounds-feet of torque at 3700 rpm. It works well with the five-speed automatic transmission to move this 4500-pound machine effortlessly over flat territory. Throttle response lacks some verve in hilly terrain. It does this by distributing power to the front and rear tires as needed. In normal driving, the system biases torque 35 percent to the front and 65 percent to the rear to minimize understeer. (understeer is when the front tires slip before the rear tires, causing the vehicle to push toward the outside of a turn.) it relies on an open differential with a viscous coupling. A clutch pack distributes power between the front and rear wheels based on traction needs. There are no switches or levers for the driver to operate. There's no low range for serious off-road driving, either, but the mountaineer's system easily handles snow, rain, mud, wet leaves, ice, and gravel. body roll, or lean, is controlled well in fast corners. Mountaineer is very stable and inspires confidence, a description that also fits the two-wheel-drive models. Its rack-and-pinion steering minimizes wandering on the highway. mountaineer's rigid frame lets its fully independent suspension soak up bumps, potholes and tar strips. summarymercury mountaineer combines convenience and versatility with luxurious accommodations.
