2004 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. An american sedan to take on japan. introductionchevrolet has completely redesigned its highly successful malibu for the 2004 model year. The only thing that carries over from the old malibu is the name. Every screw, nut and bolt is new on the 2004 malibu. The solid body structure and supple suspension result in a quiet cabin and comfortable ride yet allow spirited driving. We were impressed with the power of the available v6. On the outside, the new malibu is not a raving beauty but it is better looking than the previous model, which sold well despite its plain appearance. The interior is a mix attractive, quality trim used in some areas and cheap plastic in others. If history is any indication, the new malibu should offer good quality construction, however. The previous malibu ranked tops in the midsize car class two consecutive years in the j. Power initial quality surveys.  starting at just under $19,000 and topping out at about $25,000, malibu prices are extremely competitive with prices of the honda accord and toyota camry, which can easily top $25,000. lineupthe new malibu lineup brings far more variation in body styles, powertrains and trim levels than before. The 2004 malibu is being introduced as a midsize sedan. Early next year, a hatchback crossover version with a longer wheelbase goes on sale as the malibu maxx.  the sedan comes in three trim levels: the base malibu 18,370), ls 20,370) and lt 22,870). Ls and lt versions come with a new 3. 5-liter v6. Head curtain side airbags, which we recommend highly, are optional for base and ls models 395), but come standard on the lt.  the mid-level ls and top-of-the-line lt come with standard the v6 engine (and abs and traction control). A unique option available on the malibu is the remote starter 150), useful both in cold climates to warm up the car before the driver climbs in and in extremely hot climates to cool it down.  chevrolet predicts the new malibu will prove to be the safest midsize car, but at press time it had not been crash tested by the government. Engineers used high-strength steel in specific areas of the body and created energy-absorbing crush zones in the front and rear.  the malibu is equipped with dual-stage front airbags, three-point safety belts for all occup. walkaroundthe 2004 chevy malibu is not a gorgeous car, but its exterior appearance is vastly improved from its tupperware-bland predecessor. The new malibu has more character and class than the 2003 model. It also appears to be more substantive, giving the impression it is a more expensive car than it is. Indeed, it is slightly wider than the model it replaces.  the back end of the malibu sedan resembles the upright rears of european cars. The european touch should not be a surprise since the malibu's underbody is shared with its german and swedish cousins, the opel vectra, and the saab 9-3.  the front features a chrome bar across the full-width of the car, with the familiar chevy bowtie in gold in the center. The bar along with the headlamp shape are attempts to create a family resemblance with the chevrolet trucks, which have been so successful in the marketplace. The translation doesn't work as well on smaller cars. It appears as if chevy designers are still trying to come up with a consistent car and truck styling theme. interiorthe new malibu is equally substantial inside. With 101 cubic feet of interior space, it is extremely roomy for five passengers. The seats are comfortable. The front seat cleverly folds flat for carrying long objects such as skis.  the rear seat is a 60/40 split folding one. It further has requisite power outlets. The interior is conservatively styled but everything is logical and easy to use. Controls on the center dash are conveniently backlit for night driving.  the biggest problem with the interior is its inconsistency. Some interior parts used extremely high quality materials, such as the soft rubber door handles, which reminded us of volkswagens, the benchmark for interiors. Yet, other parts, such as the plastic surrounding the audio and climate controls, appeared cheap. The ceiling area above the visors was lumpy, the edges of the ceiling fabric where it was supposed to tuck into the trim was ragged, the handle for the lumbar support flimsy and the seat fabric puckered. Still, we didn't feel the interior materials and workmanship, in general, measured up to the craftsmanship of a honda accord or toyota camry.  a neat feature is the remote starter system, useful for starting the car from inside the house when it's very cold or very hot outside. To start the malibu, press the lock button on the remote key fob, then press and hold the remote start button for one and one-half seconds. The two-step process is designed to prevent accidental activation. It also ensures the vehicle is locked (it can be unlocked by pushing the lock button again on the key fob) and the anti-theft system engages. The remote start system receives an ever-changing radio frequency code, intended to thwart thieves, from the key fob. The vehicle turn signals flash once and the parking lights turn on when the vehicle engine begins running. To drive away after a remote start, the vehicle's ignition key must be placed in the switch and rotated to the run position. The key lets the anti-theft device know it is the proper one and allows the vehicle to run normally. If the driver doesn't drive off after 10 minutes, the engine shuts off. The car can be re-started with the push of the buttons again. The engine can be stopped by remote by pressing the remote start button on the key fob, engaging the hazard switch on the malibu's dashboard or turning the ignition key to the off position. The architecture serves as the basis for the highly successful opel vectra in germany, and the swedish-made saab 9-3. S., epsilon also will.

2000 honda accord review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The benchmark for mid-size sedans. introductionhonda accord is arguably the best mid-size sedan available. It does everything well. It is a remarkably easy car to drive and every aspect of it is user friendly.  but most people buy an accord because they feel it is a safe choice. It is, after all, a honda, so reliability should not be an issue. The accord is a car that a family can buy, then turn its attention back to the other concerns of a hectic daily life. An entire generation has grown up with hondas and the accord has been one of america's best-selling cars for the past 10 years.  for 2000, all accords feature honda's patented dual-stage inflator airbag technology, which automatically adjusts the deployment of the front passenger airbag based on the severity of the crash and whether seatbelts are being worn. They are nearly identical from an engineering standpoint, though the coupe features some performance tweaks designed to make it more fun to drive  trim levels and pricing for sedan and coupe are nearly identical. Each comes in lx 18,540) and ex 21,050) trim levels. The sedan is also available as a dx base model 15,350). Dx comes with a 135-horsepower version (lower compression ratio and sans-vtec) of the same engine. Ex v-6 comes fully loaded with leather seating surfaces. walkaroundcompletely redesigned for 1998, the accord features sharp edges and rounded corners that lend an understated, refined look, while an aggressive stance gives it the air of a european sedan. The nose is short, the hood and cowl are low, which complement the glassy cabin to provide excellent visibility from inside.  honda designed the coupe to have its own identity. It is distinguished from the sedan by its unique styling. Only the headlights and door handles are shared. The coupe is a handsome car, and a good choice for busy executives who want a car that is both sporty and practical. interiorhonda used airline business-class seating as a model for the accord interior and it is a marvel of space efficiency. The front seats are wide and comfortable and there's a surprising amount of room for rear seat passengers. While pre-1998 accords were considered big compacts, the current-generation accord is a true midsize sedan. Generous front and rear door openings make it easy to get in and out of the car. Features associated with luxury cars abound, particularly on the high-level models. Leather interiors are available in light tones that are warm and inviting. Sun visors offer sliding extensions, a homelink remote control system can be programmed to open garage doors, turn on house lights and turn off security systems. The air conditioning system, designed to quickly cool the car down after getting in on a hot day, uses an air filtration system to keep pollen out and reduce diesel fumes from buses and trucks. driving impressionthe accord corners well with steering that's light and precise. This is an easy car to drive. The suspension damps out the bumps and keeps the tires planted on the road. This handling balance is a benefit of the accord's strong chassis and double-wishbone front and rear suspensions. At the handling limit, it tends toward understeer - the front tires lose grip before the rear tires. The michelin tires are quiet and the ride quality is flawless.  accord ex v-6 feels lighter on its feet than the toyota camry and chevrolet malibu. Blasting up and down a rough, twisting back road, we explored the limits of handling, power and braking. The camry offered superb damping over the rippled pavement and the malibu surprised us with its handling prowess. The accord provided the sharpest transient response - turning left, then right, then left again. The accord also had the best brakes.  in cruise mode, the 3. 0-liter v6 engine just purrs along, barely audible. It's so smooth and so quiet that sometimes a glance at the tachometer is required to confirm that it's running. Stomp on the throttle and the growls with the authority of a free-breathing cylinder head. This engine delivers lots of power for merging into traffic or entertaining its driver. It's smooth, powerful and efficient. Generating 150 horsepower at 5700 rpm, an accord equipped with this engine is a great package that deserves consideration by anyone shopping for a roomy mid-size car that excels in quality, durability, reliability, smoothness, ride quality, practicality and fuel efficiency.  for 2000, all accords meet or exceed california's low emissions vehicle (lev) standard, regardless of engine. Honda also sells an accord ex 23,200) that meets california's demanding super ultra low emissions vehicle (sulev) standard, the most stringent in the world. It is a great family sedan, at or near the top of its class in every measure. Its handling inspires confidence and its vtec engines are smooth, powerful and efficient. To those ingredients are added honda's reputation for quality, durability and reliability.  for these reasons, the accord is extremely popular. And don't expect bargain prices because this vote of confidence puts dealers in the driver's seat. Even so, those who buy a honda accord should enjoy many years of pleasant, trouble-free motoring - important qualities for great family sedans. model lineupdx 15,350); lx 18,540); se 20,490); ex 21,050); lx v-6 21,950); ex v-6 24,550). assembled inmarysville, ohio. model testedex v-6 24,550). 2007 kia spectra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A nice little car with impressive value. introductionthe kia spectra is a small but compelling package. More important for everyday driving, the spectra is a nice little car. Its cabin is roomy and pleasant with a modern design and nice-quality materials and good fit and finish. Everything is easy to operate. It gets an epa-estimated 27/33 mpg city/highway yet produces peppy performance.  safety features are plentiful: the spectra comes with a full complement of airbag supplemental restraints. All can seat up to five passengers. Outside mirrors are manually adjustable and windows have hand cranks. Air conditioning is optional 900).  ex 15,495) adds air conditioning, power windows, heated power mirrors, power central locking, remote keyless entry, and fog lights. Headlight housings taper upward at the outer edges, drawing the eye more naturally into the hood's increased slope. The sporty ex and spectra5 are distinguished by a more assertive front end highlighted by a black mesh grille, blacked-out headlight surrounds and a deeper front spoiler.  a sharp groove etched into the side accentuates spectra's wedge shape. Embedding the door handles in the groove reduces clutter. Clearly defined fender blisters add sportiness to the wheel openings. One stylistic hiccup is the rear fender blister, which isn't as well proportioned to the surrounding body panel as is the front blister and leaves the rear wheel looking undersized. Badging is minimal, confined to a kia logo centered in the grille and above the rear license plate.  on the sedan, the arched roof flows gently into the deck via a soft, flowing sail panel. Then the back end draws all the various geometrics into a pleasing departure. The backlight (rear windscreen) is more steeply sloped, flowing more smoothly into a shorter deck. The deck lid ends in a sharp crease filling the arc between the large, angular taillights, from which it drops almost vertically from a slight indentation to the fully integrated rear bumper fascia. A large depression scooped out of the vertical trunk panel houses the rear license plate.  the spectra5 makes a bolder statement. It's nearly six inches shorter than the sedan, and exactly the same height, but its roof extends almost to its rear bumper, falling gently in height as it does, and visually separating from the more rapidly declining tops of the windows. The roof terminates in a bulky spoiler that looks as if it could actually enhance fuel economy while keeping the rear window clean. There are no quarter windows behind the rear door glass, although on the spectra5 a black plastic panel visually extends the door windows into the sail panel. But kia says the shape maximizes interior volume. interiorthe kia spectra proves that interiors can be stylish and user friendly without being expensive. Its cabin features an organic design that's pleasant to look at. It feels like a compact, but doesn't feel cheap. Everything is easy to operate with no awkward or annoying traits.  large expanses of textured materials give the spectra's dash a quality look. The same large expanses make for fewer seams and joints that inevitably will come to squeak as they work against each other, and this, plus good sound deadening, promises quiet times for people riding in the spectra. Even over rough pavement, only the sounds of tires against road penetrate the cabin. The look is quality, too, with a dark color over a lighter shade, giving the cabin an open feeling while minimizing reflected dash-top glare in the windshield. Door panels are finished with textured plastic panels and soft fabric insets that add to the openness. The rim of the steering wheel is thick and easy to grip.  the radio sits high in the center stack, below two large adjustable vents separated by an intuitively positioned hazard warning button, above which are positioned two smallish screens with digital clock and seatbelt warning displays. Stereo controls are easy to read and use, save for the tuning function, a large rocker switch that scrolls at a fixed, agonizingly slow rate up or down through the frequencies.  in the lx, two storage bins sit beneath the stereo; in the ex, sx, and spectra5, the smaller of the two bins is replaced by a row of sizable buttons, only one of which does anything, namely, turning the rear window defogger on or off. Across the lower area of the center stack are the climate control knobs: large, round and basic, with tactile feel surprisingly consistent for an economy car. At the left end of the lower dash panel are readily accessible switches for opening the trunk and adjusting the dash lights above yet another storage bin.  the center console houses two cupholders and a bin forward of the shift lever fitted with a grippy pad. Two more cupholders fold out of the rear of the center console for use by rear-seat occupants. Molded map pockets run the length of the front door bottoms; in all but the lx, these have cup-sized rounds molded into the front portion. The ex, sx, and spectra5 also get magazine nets on the back of the front seats.  seats are generally comfortable and covered in a quality fabric; they have adjustable head restraints, save for the rear center position. Front seat bottoms could be deeper, however, with more thigh support. The center console armrest is high enough for elbows but too far rearward. The spectra is roomier than most cars in the class. Headroom and hip room are better than the primary competition: the honda civic, toyota corolla and ford focus. Other than in rear-seat headroom, passenger dimensions in the spectra sedan and spectra5 are the same.  visibility out front is good, thanks in part to the height-adjustable driver's seat; from the front passenger seat, the hood slopes down steeply enough to disappear from sight. To the sides and rear, the sedan's tall glass house and slim sails ease parking and quick maneuvers in traffic. Rear headroom is above most of the class, there's a lot more hip room, and legroom is on par, though a couple of inches short of the roomy focus. One problem with the spectra's rear seat is the proximity of the rear wheel well to the door opening; inattention. driving impressionthe kia spectra is not a hot hatch, but its performance is respectable. Power output is generally well above the competition's. Only while cruising in the top gears do things truly quiet down. For the most part, wind noise is minimal except for an occasional low moan from the front passenger's side window in strong, left-to-right crosswinds.  ride quality is solid, not too firm. We found a daylong 400-mile drive wasn't unusual. Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Power Mirrors✔ Tachometer✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ CD Player✔ Aluminum Wheels

2003 mini cooper review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Adorable and affordable, quick and comfortable. introductionthe new mini cooper is more fun than a carnival ride. Both models handle like sports cars and the mini cooper s can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than seven seconds. It's adorable and affordable, starting at just $16,425. Engineered by bmw, it is executed superbly and looks and feels like a quality piece inside and out.  the new mini cooper lives up to the promise of its bulldog stance, legendary performance, and enthusiastic press reports. Bmw has successfully melded the german and british car cultures, reaching back to the 1960s for the automotive icon of mod london. The new mini has as much in common with the british car americans loved in the '60s as the new beetle has in common with the old bug. The mini cooper has been reinvented for the 21st century and has returned to the u. Much bigger and much better than the original.  mini cooper is the shortest car sold in america, but it's larger on the inside than on the outside. Like all bmws, it comes with advanced safety features and innovative engineering. Like the original, its uses front-wheel drive and a transverse-mounted (sideways) engine. But bmw employed a sophisticated suspension inspired by its rear-wheel-drive cars for superior handling, particularly on bumpy, curving roads.  bmw priced the mini with an appreciation for real-world pocketbooks yet endowed it with a visual and physical opulence that ratchets up its value quotient. The engine is mounted transversely and drives the front wheels.  mini cooper 16,425) comes standard with a high level of equipment, including a sophisticated anti-lock brake system and six airbags with head protection for front and rear passengers. Also standard: air conditioning, cd stereo with six speakers, power windows with auto-down, power locks, remote keyless entry, and a rear wiper. It comes standard with a five-speed gearbox and 15-inch alloy wheels.  cooper s 19,425) adds a supercharged version of the same engine, a six-speed gearbox, stiffer front and rear anti-roll bars for flatter handling, 16-inch wheels, and a lot of special exterior trim. Color options outnumber those in a bag of jelly beans and can be topped with a roof that's either body-colored, black or white. (white is traditional.) checkered flags and flags of different nations are available as giant roof decals, including the classic union jack and the star-spangled banner. Wheels can be white or silver. Silver gives the mini a classy aston martin look.  major options include a continuously variable transmission, or cvt 1250), automatic air conditioning 300), and a harmon kardon sound system 550) with eight speakers. Other options are grouped into packages: the sport package 1250) includes dynamic stability control, rear spoiler, fog lamps, sport seats, and larger alloy wheels. The premium package 1250) includes sunroof, automatic air conditioning, on-board computer and cruise control. The cold weather package 500) provides heat to the seats, mirrors, and windshield-washer jets, along with rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming mirror. Other options include leather seats 1250), xenon headlamps 500), and a navigation system 1600). Many of the features on the cooper s can be added to the regular cooper. Mini customers can build their car online (at miniusa. Com) with colors, options, and accessories.  . walkaroundthe mini cooper's broad brow and challenging demeanor is tempered by an appealing wonder-eyed look. The distinctive body shape is recognizable even in black paper silhouette. Measuring 97. 1 inches, the wheelbase is longer than some small cars. But the mini is shorter overall, at 142. 8 inches (less than 12 feet).  the hood is wide, but short in depth, the product of unique design and manufacturing techniques. The big round doe-eyed headlights (which go up with the hood) are partly responsible for the common reaction of 'oh-h-h, isn't it cute!' actually, this response was by intent, not chance. Mini designers also threw in what they consider to be some voluptuous feminine curves and some masculine muscular bulges to cover all the visceral reactions. Thus the mini is neither guy wheels nor a chick car. It is an engaging automotive device with an appeal that stretches across gender, age and economic status. That toaster-body shape of the mini is functional: it gives anyone riding in either back or front seats adult headroom, something that arch-shaped body designs (such as the beetle) cannot do.  the rear is trimmed with an elegant fascia with one exhaust tip exiting below the sleek rear bumper on the right side. Bmw's attention to detail is everywhere in between. Big oval mirrors afford a good view behind, where all those other cars are located.  cooper s comes with body-colored bumpers, aggressive side sills, wider wheel arches, a hood scoop, and a lower intake grille. Twin exhaust tips exit from the middle. A rear spoiler trails off the roof, chrome brightens the fuel-filler flap, and an s logo shaped like a curvy road spices up the rear badge. Even tall drivers find it comfortable.  the standard seats are firm and supportive. The sport seats are more receptive, however, longer in seat bottom with higher bolsters. Leatherette is standard and it is superb. Cloth is optional at no extra cost. Leather 1250) is optional for both models.  the front seats slide and lift out of the way to allow rear passengers into the back of this two-door hatchback, and they return to the original position. That makes loading to capacity quick and easy. The seats have recliner levers on both sides for convenience. The rear seats are surprisingly roomy. Legroom is tight, but with a little cooperation from those in front two adults can travel short distances in comfort. There's plenty of headroom and the rear seats are scooped out and provide good support. Rear seats are split and fold down for cargo versatility.  mini's interior is stylish, modern, and exudes quality. Materials and shapes are as cheery as sunshine and balloons and as now as a new magazine. Prominent circles set the design statement. That large circle in the center of the dash, equally visible to anyone in the car, is the speedometer. The positioning was borrowed from the mini of old and might seem a tad precious to those who don't smile in recollection. A racy round tachometer is perched like an add-on immediately before the driver's eyes and tilts with the adjustable steering column. The optional automatic climate controls are shaped like the mini logo, for example. The standard hvac controls are attractive and work well, though the mode selector knob lacks the nice feel of the fan knob. Radio buttons are small, but are easy to understand and operate.  the dash is neat and firm and has a high-quality leather feel to it. We like the trim on the front of the dash of the standard cooper, but we're not sure we like the finish on the plastic trim that adorns the dash and doors of the s model. Maybe we're not sunroof lovers. Cruise Control✔ Power Locks✔ Power Windows✔ Tachometer✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sport Package✔ Navigation System✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels

2008 suzuki xl-7 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The name xl7 denotes that this suzuki can be equipped to carry up to seven passengers. Fold all the passenger seats down, including the front one, and there's a generous amount of cargo space.  all-new for 2007, this latest xl7 is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous model. If its look seems faintly familiar that's because it's based on the same platform as the chevrolet equinox and pontiac torrent models from gm, though it shares no sheetmetal with them. The xl7 is assembled in canada alongside the equinox and torrent. All-wheel drive is available, improving traction and stability in foul weather and on dirt or gravel roads. The base model now comes only with front-wheel drive and only with seating for five. All-wheel drive 1,600) is optional on the other three models. The premium and luxury are available in both five-passenger and seven-passenger 1,350) configurations, while the top-of-the-line xl7 limited features standard seven-passenger seating.    the base xl7 comes with a five-speed automatic transmission with manumatic manual override. Standard features also include remote keyless entry; power windows, door locks and mirrors; tilt steering wheel; cruise control; trip computer with driver information center; auto on/off headlamps; black roof rails; 16-inch alloy wheels; privacy glass; overhead storage compartment; air conditioning with automatic climate control; and an am/fm/cd stereo system with six speakers.  the xl7 premium adds floor mats and 17-inch alloy wheels. Interior trim is woodgrain or satin-nickel, depending on upholstery color. All three-row, seven-passenger xl7's feature nivomat load-leveling rear suspension, rear cargo under floor storage, and rear air conditioning with separate controls.  the xl7 luxury adds leather seating surfaces, power driver seat, heated front seats, and brushed aluminum-look trim on its bumper valances. For 2008, a sunroof, a six-cd changer, and leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls are standard as well.  the xl7 limited adds fog lamps, rear spoiler, upgraded roof racks with silver-colored rails and cross bars, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 17-inch chrome wheels, pioneer premium am/fm/xm/cd/mp3 audio with seven speakers (including subwoofer), touch-screen navigation, and a remote starter. (xm satellite radio requires a subscription.) a dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones may be substituted for the sunroof and navigation at no cost. A new rear-vision camera 649) is also available, and exclusive to the limited.  the only other factory option is pearl white paint 200), which is available on all models, even the base.  safety features that come standard on all xl7 models include driver and passenger front airbags, side-curtain airbags for all rows of passengers, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (esp) with traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. walkaroundif there's one design element on the 2008 suzuki xl7 that's going to cause controversy it has to be the large triangular front turn signals that are integrated into the headlights to match the style of the suzuki badge. The edges of the turn signals wrap along the top of the pronounced front fender flare while the top side marks the edge of the hood, which covers the full width of the body ahead of the windshield.  although the xl7 has the same wheelbase as the chevrolet equinox and pontiac torrent its overall length is nearly nine inches greater. Some of this increase in length is in the front, giving the vehicle an unusually long hood line.  the rear three-quarter view of the xl7 is the most awkward angle. It has a heavy d-pillar that slopes down from the roof line, leaving a relatively small third-row side window. The one-piece rear tailgate has an exceptionally curved window that tends to accentuate the bulk of the vehicle.  the front bumper is cleverly built in to the front valence with the center portion painted black to make it appear smaller. The rear bumper is also painted black, but it appears hefty.  the xl7 is built on a platform known as theta that was designed for use as an suv and is sold only in north america. All the vehicles are made in canada at a factory that is jointly owned by suzuki and general motors. interiorsince a sport utility is supposed to provide utility, it's good to find suzuki put plenty of thought into making the xl7 as versatile as possible while providing an inviting interior, especially in the top trim level.  in five-seat configuration, the xl7 provides a decent amount of interior space in both rows of seats. Indeed suzuki claims the leg room in the second row of seats is the most generous in the segment.  there is plenty of cargo area behind the rear seats of the five-passenger models.  getting in and out of the rear seats is easy, an added benefit to the xl7's long wheelbase. The rear wheel well is located behind the seats, allowing for a wide door opening with no intrusion from the wheelwell.  those who opt for the third row of seats will find there is limited cargo space behind the rear seats when they are in use. However, they split in half and can be folded down to provide a flat surface for cargo carrying.  compared to some third-row seats offered in other midsize suvs, the xl7's are relatively comfortable. There is actually enough depth and leg room that a person nearing six foot can sit back there for more than just a few miles. However, because of the small rear side windows it's fairly claustrophobic sitting in the far rear. As with most suvs, however, the seating is far from being as comfortable as that found in any minivan.  naturally, the center row of seats fold down for cargo carrying. The center stack has a high mounted gearshift lever with window switches mounted alongside. The climate control knobs are well located, as are the radio controls.  a rearview camera is offered on limited models, and it's available with or without navigation. That's because instead of integrating with the navigation screen, the suzuki camera uses new technology to display an image on an otherwise-invisible screen on the left side of the rearview mirror. According to suzuki, this enables drivers to back up while looking where they would naturally look: at the mirror. The thinking is that this makes it easier for the driver to monitor the mirror itself, the view through the front windshield, and the view over his or her shoulder; all of which are more difficult to see while peering down at a display screen in the center stack. When the xl7 is in park or drive, the rearview display disappears, and the rearview mirror looks normal. The mirror display is not nearly as effective as the large dash-mounted displays, however, and we prefer the dash-mounted variety.  the previously optional remote starter is now standard on limited models. In a way that's an oxymoron as the xl7 is not truck based, nor is it based directly on a car platform. Instead its platform is somewhere between a car and truck, an approach that's becoming more popular as interest in crossover suvs grows. Its handling falls somewhere between suv and car, as well.  the xl7 shares its basic design with the chevy equinox and pontiac torrent, and its engine is derived from the 3. 6-liter dual overhead cam v6 that powers the premium equinox sport and torrent gxp. For reasons which are not clear to us, however, suzuki rates its version of this engine at a more modest 252 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque, compared with the 264 horsepower and 250 pound-feet claimed by the two gm divisions. Still, the xl7 engine is considerably stronger than the 3. 4-liter pushrod v6 that's standard in the equinox and torrent, which rates only 185 horsepower and 210 pound-feet.  we found performance in the xl7 to be quite adequate, at least in a straight line. The five-speed auto shifts gears smoothly but the engine is somewhat noisy. The transmission includes a manual shift feature. We found it somewhat disconcerting that the selected gear does not show up on the marking beside the gearshift lever itself. The only readout is located in the center of the instr.
